Why you should increase magnesium when you begin a Keto diet.

When you first start a low carbohydrate or Ketogenic diet, you may notice “keto flu” symptoms, which is really just your body craving carbs as it switches from burning sugars, to burning fats. You’ll also be losing more water and sodium in the first few days of the transition.
Keto flu symptoms can include-

  • Irritability
  • Brain fog and a difficulty staying focused.
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sugar and Carbohydrate cravings
  • Headaches
  • Constipation

It’s important to increase your magnesium and salt intake during this transition period because of the loss of electrolytes, including magnesium that occurs due to the initial high loss of water that happens when switching to low carb. You need the magnesium to help keep these keto flu symptoms under control.

Magnesium helps to keep your immune system healthy, it strengthens bones, it’s great for the heart, it can aid in getting a good night’s sleep, balances hormones and maintains normal muscle and nerve function.

Adding Magnesium to your diet can help stop any Keto flu symptoms that may be arising.

Ways to increase Magnesium include-

Epsom Salt Baths– these are great for sore and tired muscles. Magnesium can be absorbed through the skin and this is a great way of relaxing and getting your magnesium levels up. Even if it’s just soaking your feet in a tub of water with Epsom salts, you’ll be getting the benefits!

Pink Himalayan Salt– it’s a good idea to add more salt than usual to your meals. You may also like to try adding a small amount of salt in your water bottle to keep your salt intake up, instead of flushing it all out when you are drinking lots of water.

Diet- Foods that are high in magnesium include-
Avocados, Fatty fish like sardines and salmon, dark chocolate (real chocolate, not the sugary processed stuff!), nuts and seeds, leafy greens.

Magnesium sprays, oils or rubs that can be applied directly to the skin on a regular basis to boost Magnesium levels.

If after adding more magnesium to your diet, you still notice Keto flu symptoms, try adding more fats to your diet or increasing your carbohydrate levels a little bit.

Listen to your body and if there is something not right, do something about it. Get it checked out, get more advice, but take action. The Keto diet is amazing when it’s done properly and you’ll feel better for it. But you still have to make sure that you are getting all of your nutrients to maintain optimal health.

Namaste, Janine
